Cigarette Litter Prevention Program
Did you know that cigarette butts are the #1 most littered item in the United States? Cigarette litter is a serious problem, especially when at least 18% of roadside litter ends up in our waterways!
One problem is that the average Broward County resident doesn't even know that cigarette butts are considered litter. The same person who would never think of tossing garbage like fast food wrappers, drink bottles or cans out of their car window doesn't consider it littering to toss a cigarette butt on the ground.
This is one perception that that Cigarette Litter Prevention Program hopes to change. According to Keep America Beautiful, the increasing amount of cigarette litter is due to three things: lack of awareness, lack of ash receptacles, and the increased necessity to smoke outdoors.
This summer, Adopt-A-Street is expanding its Cigarette Litter Prevention Program into historic downtown Hollywood. With the help of the City of Hollywood Public Works department, and the Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency, we will be installing receptacles along Hollywood Boulevard and Harrison Street in the historic district. The first round of installations is set for early July. Help us keep the historic district free of cigarette litter by disposing of your cigarette butts in one of our Cigarazzi Receptacles, which will be put up throughout the district.

In 2005, in an effort to help fight cigarette litter, the Adopt-A-Street Program in partnership with Broward Beautiful, the City of Hollywood, and Broardwalk stakeholders, took part in Keep America Beautiful’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Pilot Program.
This innovative program was the first in Broward County to study and collect data that will assist in implementing an efficient program that will help decrease the amount of cigarette butt litter along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk from Johnson Street to Connecticut Street, while at the same time increasing the public’s awareness of beach litter.

Adopt-A-Street’s strategy during the pilot program, and now for its Historic Downtown Expansion project, consists of three main objectives:
- Installation of ash receptacles
- Use of pocket ashtrays
- Campaigns to educate the public
