  • The RRS has been meeting its requirement for ash disposal with its Ash Monofill, constructed in 1991.

Leachate Management at the Ash Monofill
  • Leachate is temporarily stored for use at the Facility but when storage exceeds needs, it must be discharged to the City of Hollywood’s wastewater treatment system.

Ash Monofill is a Marketable Asset
  • The Wheelabrator South Broward Waste-to-Energy Facility will still continue operating after the agreement expires in August 2011.
  • The Wheelabrator South Broward Waste-to-Energy Facility will continue to need ash disposal after the agreement.
  • The Ash Monofill is in close proximity to the Wheelabrator South Broward Waste-to-Energy Facility.

Summary of Expansion
  • If expansion is chosen, there will be an estimated cost of $10.5M - $11.5M for construction of the expansion.


  • If expansion is not chosen, there will be an estimated cost of $17.5M for closure and long-term maintenance for the existing 34.3 acres of the Ash Monofill.


  • In addition, there will be a Disposal/Transportation fee of approximately $9.3M - $9.4M per year.
