Broward County Household Hazardous Waste
Collection Program

Broward County'spaint cans 1.6 million residents use small amounts of hazardous chemicals in their homes. Even small amounts can cause environmental problems if they find their way into Broward's drinking water and can also harm sanitation workers if collected at curbside with regular trash collection. The safest way to dispose of hazardous home chemicals is to carefully pack them up and bring them to one of Broward County's HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW) Collection Centers. The HHW program accepts hazardous chemicals generated from Broward County residents FREE OF CHARGE and disposes or recycles them according to all local, state and federal regulations.

Every Friday and Saturday, two of the HHW drop-off centers are open to collect waste that cannot be collected curbside: the North HHW Collection Center  which is in Pompano, and the South HHW Collection Center  in West Park. The Central HHW Collection Center  is in Davie and open Saturdays only.  HHW disposal requires the expertise of specially trained chemists and field technicians who identify dangerous product constituents, segregate incompatible chemicals and properly store or pack up the waste for transportation to a facility (outside of Broward) specially permitted to accept hazardous waste.

The goal of the HHW program is to reduce the amount of hazardous waste being disposed of improperly and harming our environment. The HHW program also aims to educate Broward County residents about the dangers associated with hazardous waste and encourage proper waste management.

What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?

household wasteHHW refers to used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain chemicals with one of the four characteristics: Toxic, Ignitable, Corrosive, Reactive as defined by the EPA.

Some HHW materials can be dropped off at other facilities that may be more convenient than the county's three collection centers. Follow the links below for more information and alternative drop-off sites for: propane cylinders or used motor oil.

Some items are not accepted at the county's HHW collection centers:

Biohazardous waste (medical waste) - contact the Broward County Public Health Unit.
Explosives - contact your local law enforcement agency.

The "Paint It Broward" recycled latex paint program distributes paint to Broward municipalities to be used for beneficial programs such as graffiti control and neighborhood beautification. Cities also distribute recycled latex paint to residents free of charge!

Contact your local recycling coordinator for pickup procedures and available colors. Residents in unincorporated areas may contact the Hotline (954-765-4999) for instructions on how to receive free recycled latex paint and available colors.

Remember to "Paint It Broward!" and help Reduce, Reuse & Recycle!

One of the most important materials delivered to the HHW collection centers is leftover paint. Oil-based paint is consolidated by the county's hazardous waste disposal contractor to be burned as supplemental fuel in industrial furnaces. 100% of the latex paint collected is sent to a reblending facility where it is reblended and re-packaged into high quality latex paint.
