Flooding
Once water levels are above the top of canal's and lake's banks we have flooding. House floor elevations and major roads are designed to be higher than the water levels after a 100 year flood. The 100 year flood event is the an event that has a one percent chance of occuring in any given year. The probabilities are base upon historical records for the area.

The level varies depending upon where you live (see figure 1.)(pdf 104k)
Open areas, yards, and local streets are design to be higher than water levels after a 10 year storm event. Consequently, when we get more rainfall than a 1 in 10 year storm yards and local roads may flood.

The level varies depending upon where you live (see figure 2.)
Unfortunately, there are a few individual homes and some areas of the County that have not been designed to these criteria.

There are several programs and projects that are attempting to solve these problems. Click here to see what Broward County is doing in a number of unincorporated areas of the County to alleviate flooding problems and make major neighborhood improvements.
