Welcome From
Lois Wexler
Dear Neighbors,
I consider it a privilege to represent the residents of District 5 on the Broward County Commission. As you know, I’ve recently completed my one year term as Broward County Mayor and during that time we experienced a sharp downturn in our economy, which brought many challenges. However, there were also many accomplishments and this was all outlined in the 2008 State of the County Address that is now available for review on this website. Please click on the 2008 State of the County link and let me know what you think. It has been an honor to serve as Mayor and of course I remain the Broward County Commissioner for District 5 after a successful re-election in November.
Many of you know me from my twelve years of service on the School Board of Broward County. I was first elected in 1992 and served three terms as chairperson. My experience on the School Board convinced me that I could bring new ideas and a fresh approach to the County Commission.
Since elected to the Commission in November, 2004, I pride myself on assessing, prioritizing and expanding programs and services for senior citizens and recognizing the importance of utilizing data and technology in our current systems. I am referred to as the “Process Commissioner”. I know that with good processes, good government will happen. The one process that needs curbing is that one that I am working hard to streamline: the bureaucratic process that is often inherent in government. I am committed to making Broward County government more efficient. One area that is of particular interest is the County’s procurement process. Accountability is critical. Utilizing data to make decisions is in the best interest of the residents of Broward County. In the past I served on a number of boards, councils and committees serving our community. My involvement currently includes membership on the Children’s Services Board, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the School Oversight Committee and the South Florida Regional Planning Council. Providing for the needs of our elderly population is critical and one of my priorities. To that end, I serve on the Broward Aging Alliance and spearheaded the first Elder Services Summit. The Alliance serves as a coordinated leadership body concerned with matters relating to the well-being and improvement of the quality of life for Broward County’s elder residents. The Elder Services Summit was a one day working forum designed to address and plan for issues facing our elderly residents.
While I was raised in Dade County, I have been a resident of Broward County for more than 35 years. My husband, Steve, and I are parents of two adult daughters and now have the pleasure of watching our two grandsons grow up in our beautiful community.
I want you to know that I am here to work with you and for you. I understand the role of a policy maker and I believe I have the determination, professionalism and integrity to serve you well. It is critically important to me that the County and the Cities/Towns work together. We can find the common ground necessary to create the partnerships which are beneficial and productive to you, our constituents. As many of you have already discovered my office serves as a resource to all in our community. We provide information to our Home Owner Associations, Condo Associations and Civic Associations and we work to resolve the issues that you bring to our attention.
I strive to be accessible and responsive to your issues and concerns. Your opinions and thoughts are important to me. Please feel free to contact me at anytime by calling 954-357-7005 or by e-mail at: lwexler@broward.org.
