Vision

​Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC)​ is committed to providing culturally aware services for all. Our Vision is to instill hope through a comprehensive continuum of care that empowers individuals, families, and communities to enter and sustain recovery.​​

​BARC is committed to delivering services with respect that supports the culture, values, beliefs, and languages of each individual and promotes meaningful, relevant, and active participation.

History​


 
  • 1973: The Broward Alcoholism Receiving Center (BARC) was opened on May 15, 1973. BARC started as a pilot program for intake, medical detoxification in the City of Fort Lauderdale. The first site was located on the floor of a renovated nursing home on Andrews Avenue with 20 staff members.
  • 1977: The Agency expanded to include outpatient care and moved into the Central Baptist Church in Sailboat Bend and became known as the Broward Alcoholism Rehabilitation Center (BARC). 
  • 1987: The Perinatal Addiction Program was started by Ruther Carter and the name was changed to Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC). 
  • 1990: A BARC satellite facility opened in Pompano Beach for Intensive Residential Treatment.
  • 1994: Coral Springs Residential facility opens in October, named after Judge Stephen R. Booher.
  • 2000: Outpatient Services moved to present location at BARC Mills, 900 NW 31st Avenue, Fort Lauderdale.
  • 2018: The BARC legacy continues as many services moved into a new, state-of-the-art building.  This facility has become the flagship for Administration, Admissions, Detoxification Services and Outpatient Treatment. 
  • 2024: Establishes the Care Coordination Team and the Outreach Team to provide the most effective evidence-based care for all of Broward County. 
  • 2025: Enters​ its 52nd year of service to the residents of Broward County and remains a major community partner in providing substance use services.​​

​​Broward Addiction Recovery Center ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​is proudly accredited through The Joint Commission. This accreditation illustrates our dedication and commitment for continual improvement of service requiring a thorough periodic evaluation. The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization, offering an unbiased assessment of quality achievement in patient care and safety.  Additionally, we are fully licensed by the Florida Department of Children and Families.​ ​
