Ambient Air​ ​M​onitoring ​

Monitoring air quality is an integral part of upholding our mission to safeguard human health and the natural environment. Using a network of ambient air monitoring stations across the county, we are constantly measuring levels of pollutants in our air in accordance with established EPA standards. This work is vital to enhancing the quality of life in Broward County because there are many well studied negative health effects associated with high levels of various air pollutants. By continually monitoring our air we are able to rapidly alert our population, should any air pollutants reach unhealthy levels.​

Each monitoring site:

• Is strategically placed to represent population needs in Broward County. 
  
• Has monitoring instruments that are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), that are either Federal Reference Method and/or Federal Equivalent Method.
  
• Is designed to measure specific pollutant concentrations; Several of the monitoring locations also measure meteorological conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction. 
  
• Retrieves pollutant data hourly by a central computer via an automated telephone connection.
  
• Gathers air quality data that becomes part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) national air quality data base.
