Broward County's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and North Perry Airport (HWO), a general aviation airport, form a diverse and dynamic airport system. This airport system typically serves the needs of more than 36 million commercial airline and general aviation community travelers throughout South Florida.

In 2022, FLL welcomed nearly 31.7 million passengers as the travel recovery neared pre-pandemic levels. FLL ranked as the 17th busiest U.S. airport for passenger traffic overall and was 20th for domestic travel volume and 11th for international traffic in 2022, according to trade group Airports Council International - North America, a notable authority in the aviation industry.​  In 2021, despite the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport served nearly 28.1 million passengers, up from 16.5 million in 2020. Before COVID-19, FLL generated $37.5 billion in economic activity annually and nearly 18,000 direct, local jobs. 

Located in Greater Fort Lauderdale in the heart of Florida's Gold Coast, FLL's strategic location provides a catchment area of more than six million people. A considerable portion of the population is affluent and leads the state in travel expenditures. 

FLL averages more than 300​​​ departures a day and offers non-stop service to 98 U.S. cities and global connectivity to 50 international destinations in 24 countries, based on 2022 data. 

Part of Broward County

Broward County, a political subdivision of the State of Florida, owns the two airports. The airports are operated by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The Commission delegates the management and operations of FLL and HWO to the Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD). The Aviation Department is a self-supporting agency of the Broward County Commission that does not rely on local tax dollars for operations and capital improvements. 

Self-Sup​​porting​

The two airports are monetarily self-supporting. We do not use any Broward County tax revenue to support the Airports' operations, maintenance, or capital improvements. The Aviation Department generates funds through user fees, rentals, and other charges. Bonds, fees, and grants (state and federal) fund capital improvement projects. Any surpluses are reinvested into the airport facilities.​​

​​​Economic Impact 

As one of the leading economic engines in Broward County, FLL generates 255,386 direct, indirect, and induced jobs and has an annual economic impact of $37.5 billion, according to a 2019 independent consultant's review, the latest data available.

Meanwhile, HWO accounts for 2,090 direct and indirect jobs and generates total business sales of approximately $285 million, as shown by a Florida Department of Transportation's Economic Impact Study released in November 2022. ​
