Overview

Broward County Transit (BCT) is exploring a premium, high-capacity transit link designed to move people quickly, comfortably, and sustainably between Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (Airport), Port Everglades (Seaport), and the Broward County Convention Center (Convention Center).

As part of the Premium Mobility Program (PREMO), The Connector project isn’t just about shorter travel times; it’s about creating a better travel experience while strengthening the local economy and improving the quality of life for everyone.

PROJECT MAP

A map of the study area for The Connector Project Development and Environmental Study. The map includes a top boundary just north of Southeast 17th Street near the Convention Center, west boundary including Port Everglades, south boundary including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and east boundary including South Federal Highway. A conceptual alignment of the project starts at FLL Airport, continues North to Port Everglades, and ends at the Broward County Convention Center.

Project Development and Environmental (PD&E) Study

Broward County Transit is conducting a Project Development and Environmental (PD&E) Study to evaluate potential routes and technologies and seek public input to shape the future of this key mobility connection.

This study will conduct a two-tiered alternatives analysis to determine engineering feasibility, environmental impacts, economic benefits, and community needs.

PD&E Study Public Outreach

The PD&E Study Public Outreach schedule is shown with a public kickoff meeting in early 2026, engineering analysis in early 2026, public alternatives workshop in summer 2026, preferred alternative adoption in fall 2026, and environmental analysis in summer 2027.

Public Kickoff Meeting - Early 2026

Public engagement begins to introduce the project’s goals and how it will benefit the community.

Tier 1 & Tier 2 Analysis - Early 2026
During Tier 1, Broward County Transit will examine a full range of premium transit options to connect Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Port Everglades, and the Broward County Convention Center. The project will evaluate potential routes and alignments, consider environmental impacts, evaluate engineering feasibility, and assess community priorities.

A second analysis will begin in early 2026 to refine the top two options in greater detail. The public will be invited to an Alternatives Workshop, anticipated to take place in Summer 2026, to see the early design concepts and reflect the community’s feedback in the plan.

Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) – Fall 2026
The best option will be recommended to the Board of County Commissioners, who will decide whether to adopt the recommendations as the LPA. The LPA includes alignment, stations, vehicles, and maintenance facility location. The project will then move into preliminary engineering and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis, bringing Broward County one step closer to a more connected future.

NEPA Analysis – Summer 2027
Under NEPA, the project is expected to evaluate potential impacts and identify ways to avoid, minimize, or mitigate them as early design progresses. A public meeting will take place after the LPA is selected to inform the public of potential environmental impacts before the NEPA study concludes.
After the PD&E study is completed, the chosen alternative will advance to design, property acquisition, and construction. BCT will follow the federal process to secure Federal Transit Administration (FTA) approval and funding for future phases.

PROJECT TIMELINE
Schedule subject to change

The project timeline starts with the planning phase which was completed in 2023. The PD&E Study will run from 2025 to 2028 and define the purpose and need for the project, complete preliminary design, evaluate modes and route options, include environmental analysis and documentation, and gather community input. The next phase involves the design, property acquisition and construction which is anticipated to start in 2028 and be completed in 2032. The Connector project is expected to open for service in 2032.

Planning (Completed 2023)

Approved as a part of the PREMO program.
