FAQ
What is tilling, and why does it need to be done?
Beach tilling is required by State permits to loosen the sand for sea turtle nesting. Without tilling, the beach could be too compact and sea turtles may have trouble digging their nests.
Is this different from beach cleaning?
Yes, tilling penetrates the sand about 36" and loosens sand for sea turtle nesting. Also, beach cleaning efforts often focus on the area near the high tide line, but tilling needs to take place across the entire sandy beach.
Do I need to remove my property's beach furniture?
Yes, we need your help with this! Please ensure that all beach chairs, umbrellas, and other equipment are removed from the beach before sunset the day before tilling will take place in your area. Chairs can be set up after tilling is completed in your area. Progress updates on where the tilling has been completed will be posted to our website.
How will you keep beachgoers safe during this work?
An ATV escort will guide the tilling equipment down the beach to ensure that the beach is clear. For your safety, please abide by all contractor instructions.
How will you keep sea turtles safe during this work?
Beach tilling will be coordinated closely with the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program. All marked sea turtle nests will be avoided.
Who can I contact if I have more questions?
