Certified Small Business Wins BIG on BCCCH Project with Prime Balfour Beatty
Malcolm MacInnes launched MGM General Contracting, Inc. in 2006. His goal, to integrate his 30 years of success with a large construction company into his own firm, providing the full range and scope of services of a large business with the client-driven, flexible benefits of a small operation.
Indeed, it seemed an ambitious goal. The U.S. economy was entering an economic downturn that would handicap the construction industry for some time, and MacInnes was leaving the security of a large firm, Boston-based John Moriarty and Associates. Even so, he took confidence in the success he experienced opening John Moriarty and Associates’ Florida division, growing it with a small team from four employees.
His instincts were correct. Today, Fort Lauderdale-based MGM General Contracting is an enterprise focused on aviation, retail, office, commercial and education projects. Most recently, MGM completed projects throughout all the 20 million square feet that is the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.
Currently, the MGM team is working on its largest single project in company history as the concrete shell contractor at the Broward County Convention Center and Hotel (BCCCH) for the West expansion, which adds 150,000 square feet to the existing exhibit hall for a future 350,000 square-foot space. According to MacInnes, his firm was able to win this contract by establishing good relationships with the Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development (OESBD).
“MGM knew about the upcoming project at the Broward County Convention Center and reached out to the Broward County OESBD about who to meet with,” explains MacInnes. “I was able to meet with John Parker, vice president of operations at Balfour Beatty, the design builder for the project, who was interested in exploring the opportunity with MGM.”
Understanding MGM would have to compete against large established contractors in the competitive region, MacInnes identified how the firm could be of value to the project and worked with its network of partners to put together a highly qualified team with a proven track record to bid on the BCCCH project. By providing a competitive bid, MacInnes and his team won the work for the BCCCH West expansion and plan to bid on the hotel, plaza and East expansion of the project.
“We continue to meet with many companies through the OESBD and our own outreach programs as we progress with the design and construction phasing of the project," says John Parker. “MacInnes and MGM participated in several outreach opportunities where they continually demonstrated their ability to work through the challenges of the design-build process, provided competitive pricing and showed their willingness to be a true partner to all stakeholders of the project. Balfour Beatty could not ask for a better partner on the West expansion and it’s a greater win knowing we are supporting the citizens of Broward County!”
