2017 Enhanced Local Mitigation Strategy (ELMS)
The
Broward County Enhanced Local Mitigation Strategy (ELMS) which serves as the countywide comprehensive mitigation plan was approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The plan, also adopted by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, had been updated to study, identify, and assess the County’s vulnerability to natural and human-caused hazards. The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA 2000) requires all local governments to have a hazard mitigation plan in place in order to receive mitigation funding from FEMA.
Through the Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) process, the county has identified 12 significant hazards of concern that can potentially impact Broward County residents, visitors, businesses and properties. Detailed information regarding risks associated with these hazards can be found in the ELMS.
