Ms. Smith’s entire career has been dedicated to the profession of mental health. She is a life-long advocate for the mentally ill, women’s rights, civil rights and the homeless. She has addressed the full spectrum of women’s rights including mental health, homeless and housing, while fundraising for non-profit organizations and political candidates.

Ms. Smith has presented on Mental Health and the Broward County Mental Health Courts system locally, nationally and internationally, and has vigorously lobbied for women’s health and the mentally ill in Tallahassee and Washington.

She is the Vice Chair of the City of Margate Grants Board, and serves on the National Organization for Women; National PAC Board; Fort Lauderdale Branch NAACP Executive Committee and Fundraising Chair; Broward County Mental Health Association Nominating Committee; and Broward County Housing Finance Authority Board of Directors.

In the past, she has served as President of the National Organization for Women, Broward Chapter; Chairperson, Fort Lauderdale Branch Women In The NAACP; Vice Chair, Broward County Human Rights Board; Vice Chair, Broward County Mental Health Association of Broward County; and Board Member, Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership Advisory Board (HIP). She has also served on the National Organization for Women National Board and was appointed to the 17th Circuit Judicial Nomination Committee by Governor Lawton Chiles.

Ms. Smith is well respected in the community and has received numerous awards including induction into the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame, Women History Coalition Equality Award, Henderson Mental Health Center, Inc. Creativity Award, SDA Church Community Service Award, National Alliance for the Mental Ill of Broward County (NAMI) TIME Award, Pompano Chamber of Commerce Community Ambassador’s Award, Planned Parenthood Exceptional Women Award, Mental Health Association of Broward County, EPIC Award and the AFL-CIO Economic Justice Award.
