SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is responsible leadworker work in performing advanced and complex chemical and bacteriological tests.

 

Work involves overseeing and personally performing specialized chemical analyses of raw and treated water, pollutants, and related duties to maintain compliance with procedures and methods.   Employee exercises independent judgment in assigning tasks to subordinates, interpreting test results and establishing examination priorities.   Work is performed under general supervision from a technical superior.   Work is subject to review through conferences and the evaluation of reports.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

This classification is distinguished from a Laboratory Technician by the leadworker responsibilities associated with the position.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Assists a professional superior in the supervision of a laboratory.

 

Oversees, trains and assists lab technicians in lab and field procedures.

 

Has the responsibility of operating and maintaining continuous monitoring equipment and ensuring that valid results are obtained.

 

Calibrates and maintains field sampling and testing equipment.

 

Performs standard lab analyses for common physical and chemical parameters.

 

Prepares charts and graphs of test data.

 

Computes and records lab tests.

 

Inspects and evaluates wastewater sources; prepares standards and reagents.

 

Examines air samples to determine presence of toxic vapors, collects particulate samples to ascertain concentration levels.

 

Conducts gravimetric and colorimetric analyses.

 

Prepares and submits written analytical reports of laboratory findings and recommends repetition of testing and corrective action in abnormal findings.

 

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of analyzing the composition of substances.

 

Considerable knowledge of EPA methods for the collection of samples from ground and surface waters and industrial and domestic wastewater.

 

Considerable knowledge of modern equipment and scientific instruments used in air and water pollution control.

 

Ability to apply scientific and technical knowledge with accuracy and judgment in the completion of laboratory tests and examinations.

 

Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to laboratory and field instruments and equipment.

 

Ability to swim.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

 

Skill in laboratory manipulative techniques.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Completion of two (2) years of college level course work in chemistry or biology or closely related field; four (4) years experience in laboratory technician work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
