NATURE OF WORK
This is responsible administrative work serving as the spokesperson for the Aviation department in all matters regarding public and media relations.
Develops, implements and directs a variety of professional services and programs including media relations, public relations, special events coordination and publication production for the FortLauderdale-HollywoodInternationalAirport.
Assists the Director of Aviation in disseminating information regarding airport programs and activities. Coordinates airport media issues with federal officials, airline representatives and other airport tenants.
Responds to and coordinates media communications during emergencies.
Supervises public information staff and interfaces with other Department and County staff to relay public information. Assignments are received in the form of broad policy statements. Work is performed independently with general supervision from an administrative superior. Performance is reviewed periodically through conferences and written reports.
Manages and implements the airport public and media relations programs. Serves as the airport’s contact with the media; receives inquires from the press concerning various airport activities, including emergencies; contacts media representatives to promote upcoming airport activities and events and to arrange for media coverage of such events; prepares and submits press releases as needed; makes announcements on television and radio regarding airport operations and airport conditions.
Prepares and distributes news releases and informational materials and makes presentations at public and private forums on aviation and airport issues and prepares speech material for the Airport Director.
Manages the airport radio station information and updates and production of applicable internal employee communication newsletters.
Coordinates writing, editing, and photography for departmental publications and handles requests for filming activities on airport property.
Directs the dissemination of aviation public information to keep the Aviation and local community, government agencies and media informed of the objectives and progress of FLL programs.
Maintains knowledge of current events in the aviation industry to ensure accurate dissemination of information in response to media and public information requests.
Develops and maintains working relationships with the print and broadcast media; prepares and disseminates written information to them, either in person or through other department and airport staff.
Serves as a liaison with the Airport Community Outreach program and staff to assist with coordination of airport information in response to community requests for information.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism and public relations involving the preparation and dissemination of informational material to all types of media.
Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal regulations pertaining to the aviation industry, including security, safety, aircraft operations, emergency procedures and control of air traffic.
Knowledge of principles and practices of publishing, graphic arts, filming and production.
Knowledge of correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Ability to plan, organize and direct various public informational and public relations programs designed to promote the use and understanding of airport facilities.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with representatives of the press, radio, and television, county and community officials and groups, airline representatives and other groups and individuals as required.
Ability to represent the airport and the County before mass media during a variety of emergency situations occurring at the airport.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making.
Ability to assign and supervise the work of staff performing public information duties.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.
Excellent oral, written and graphic communications skills and the ability to effectively respond to issues on a broad range of topics.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in journalism, communications, public relations or related field; six (6) years experience in administering or directing a media relations or public relations program related to the Aviation industry, including two (2) years supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances for working at an airport.
