Elected officials: The Broward Code of Ethics for Elected Officials (County Ethics Code) authorizes your municipal attorney or his or her designee to issue you a binding advisory opinion on how the County Ethics Code applies to you.  If you provide all material facts to the attorney and you act in accordance with the opinion, you may not be found in violation of the County Ethics Code.  If you obtain such an advisory opinion, you must email the opinion within 15 days to ethicsadvisoryopinions@broward.org.   The County Attorney's Office maintains the county opinions database, linked above.

All public officials and employees:  To obtain an advisory opinion about how the State Code of Ethics for Public Officials and Employees (State Ethics Code) applies to you, contact the Florida Commission on Ethics (CE) at (850) 488-7864.  The CE is empowered to render informal opinions by CE staff and formal, written opinions by the full Commission.  These opinions are also binding.  The CE maintains the state opinions database, linked above.

Although the OIG cannot give you a legal opinion, you are welcome to contact us and find out how we interpret an ethics law.
