Florida Atlantic Research

Purpose
To promote scientific research and development in affiliation with and related to the research and development activities of one or more state-based, accredited, public or private institutions of higher education; to finance and refinance capital projects related to the establishment of a research park and development park in affiliation with one or more institutions of higher education, including facilities that complement or encourage the complete operation thereof; and fostering the economic development and broadening the economic base of Broward County in affiliation with one or more institutions of higher education.

Created By:

Joint Resolution #1984-2822 of the Boards of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County and Broward County, adopted November 27, 1984, approving the concept of the creation of a research and development authority; and Florida Atlantic University indicating an intention to affiliate with a research and development park.

Ordinance #85-60, effective October 8, 1985, pursuant to Section 159.701 - 159.7095, Florida Statutes, as amended.

Membership:

Not less than seven (7) members.

(1) Three (3) members shall be appointed at-large by the Broward
County Commission.

(2) Three (3) members shall be appointed by the Palm Beach County Commission.

(3) The President of Florida Atlantic University, or his/her designee, shall be a member of the Authority.

Each member shall be a resident and elector of, or whose principal place of employment is in Broward County or Palm Beach County, and who have demonstrated an interest in promoting the goals of the Authority.

DUAL OFFICEHOLDING:
The Florida Constitution prohibits a person from simultaneously holding more than one office under the government of the state, counties, and municipalities. The prohibition applies to both elected and appointed offices. It is not necessary that the two offices be within the same governmental unit.

Terms:

Four (4) years. Vacancies shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term. Members are eligible for re-appointment

Quorum:

A majority of the members of the authority.

Meetings:

Six times per year.
