Public Safety Coordinating Council

Purpose

To serve in an advisory capacity to the Broward County Board of County Commissioners on the following matters:

1) To develop a local public safety plan for future jail and community corrections needs that covers at least a five (5) year period;

2) To study and assess the population status of all correctional facilities owned or operated by Broward County;

3) To formulate recommendations on any issue related directly or indirectly to the Broward County jail population in an effort to ensure that the capacities of such facilities are not exceeded and that these limited resources are used as efficiently as possible;

4) To forward these recommendations to the appropriate agencies for consideration;

5) To provide an efficient and timely criminal justice system in Broward County;

6) To provide quarterly reports to the Board of County Commissions, on the population of Broward County’s correctional facilities.

Broward County Resolution #2007-700, adopted October 9, 2007.

Amended by Resolution #2008-253, adopted April 8, 2008; providing that members who are appointed based on their specific position shall not be subject to the removal provisions set forth in Section 1-233, Broward County Code.

Amended by Resolution #2010-688, adopted September 28, 2010; providing that a quorum shall consist of a majority of the appointed members.

Membership

Eighteen (18) members.

(A) Five (5) appointments by the Broward County Commission:

1. The Mayor of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners or another County Commissioner, if designated;

2. A representative nominated by the Broward County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association;

3*. Director of a Broward County mental health treatment program nominated by the Council;

4*. A community representative nominated by the Council;

5*. A community representative nominated by the Council whom shall be an individual who provides bail bonds in Broward County.

*Members 3, 4, and 5 shall serve a four (4) year term. 

(B) The remaining thirteen (13) members are appointed by other agencies or by virtue of their position as follows:

  1. Broward County State Attorney or designated Assistant State Attorney;
  2. Broward County Public Defender, or designated Assistant Public Defender;
  3. Chief Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit in and for Broward County;
  4. Broward County Sheriff or Jail Director in Broward County;
  5. Florida Department of Corrections Probation Circuit Administrator;
  6. Director of Broward County Sheriff’s Office Department of Community Control;
  7. Director of Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC);
  8. Broward County Clerk of the Courts;
  9. Administrative Judge, Circuit Court, Criminal Division, 17th Judicial Circuit;
  10. Administrative Judge, County Court, Criminal Division, 17th Judicial Circuit;
  11. Chair, Broward County Police Chief’s Association or designated Police Chief; and
  12. Chair, Broward Workshop Community Justice Committee or designee.

Terms

Section 1-233 of Chapter 1, Article XII, Broward County Code of Ordinances, as may be amended from time to time.

Members who are appointed based on their specific position shall not be subject to the removal provisions set forth in Section 1-233, Broward County Code.

Quorum

A majority of the total members.
