Urban Wilderness Advisory Board

Purpose

Develop and maintain a list of the lands within Broward County which are suitable for designation as wilderness areas.

Submit reports on those lands which should be given the highest authority and feasible methods for the acquisition of lands suitable for designation as wilderness areas.

Formulate rules and regulations to govern the use of designated wilderness areas and review and comment on staff developed resource management plans and master plan.

Transfer the ongoing responsibilities of the Urban Wilderness Advisory Board to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board following the conclusion of the UWAB’s primary duties and the sunsetting of the UWAB.

Created By

Broward County Ordinance #77-36, enacted July 13, 1977, providing for the creation of an Urban Wilderness Park System and advisory board.

Amended by Ordinance #81-104, enacted October 15, 1981, providing for notice regarding property to be recommended for establishment as an urban wilderness area.

Amended by Ordinance #90-15, enacted July 10, 1990, adding membership categories.

Amended by Ordinance #92-12, enacted May 12, 1992, revising the public hearing and notice requirements to be consistent with Florida Statues and other County ordinances and procedures.

Amended by Ordinance #1999-73, enacted December 14, 1999, amending definitions, priorities of acquisition and establishment, and withdrawal of lands from the system.

Amended by Resolution #2009-284, adopted April 14, 2009, providing for the transfer of ongoing responsibilities of the Urban Wilderness Advisory Board to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board following the conclusion of the UWAB’s primary duties and the sunsetting of the UWAB.

Membership

Nine (9) members.

Each member of the Broward County Commission shall appoint one (1) member.

Each member must have either a professional degree or demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in at least one of the following eight (8) scientific fields:

1) Biology;

2) Botany;

3) Physical Sciences;

4) Zoology;

5) Environmental Science;

6) Archaeology;

7) History; or

8) Hydrology.

Terms

Section 1-233 of Chapter 1, Article XII, Broward County Code of Ordinances, as may be amended from time to time.

Quorum

A majority of the total appointed board members.
