1. Old Courthouse – knock down (UPDATED)
[Broward County Judicial Complex 500-Car Enabling Work (District 4)]
Planned abatement work on all floors complete. Abatement of isolated unforeseen asbestos containing material on all floors is in progress and expected to be complete by late July 2026. However, the additional unforeseen asbestos containing material discovered (the week of April 6th, 2026) inside the buildings that will be demolished, may extend the time required for abatement. Soft interior demolition on all floors of central and west buildings is complete. Full interior demolition is approximately 90% complete. Structural demolition and fabrication of the East Wing west wall is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Demolition of the Central and West Wings will start in early July 2026.

[Broward County Judicial Complex 500-Car Garage (District 4)]
Knocking down of the Old Courthouse will allow for construction to proceed. The notice to proceed for early bid items was issued to the Managing General Contractor (MGC) on September 18, 2025, allowing it to procure long-lead items prior to construction commencement. Construction of the Garage and Plaza is expected to commence near the end of 2026 and extend for approximately 16 months (i.e., project completion attainment in April 2028), noting that the parking garage completion is expected to occur in late 2027. The contract for construction, including the revised project budget, was approved at the January 22, 2026, Board of County Commissioners (BCC) regular meeting.
3. Commission Building (UPDATED)
[Broward County Government Center (District 8)]
A workshop presentation, to provide a thorough overview of the project, took place on March 3, 2026. The Board reached consensus for the new Government Center to be constructed at the 201 W. Broward Blvd site (fka Gore Property), providing for the reduced programming scope. The Design Criteria Professional will finalize the Design Criteria Package (DCP) by mid-May to incorporate direction provided by the Board. Staff will process the required documents for a new Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a Phased Design-Build project and the Board will receive the standard notification prior to issuance. The Design Consultant for demolition of the existing Gore Building submitted construction documents for the project to the Building Department for permit review in mid-March, as scheduled. Concurrently, the demolition project was submitted to the Purchasing Division to be advertised for bidding. The project was advertised on March 23, 2026, and will close on April 24, 2026. The Environmental Consultant submitted the Site Assessment Report to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) in November 2025, received FDEP's feedback and submitted follow-up responses to FDEP on January 20, 2026. Options for remediation of the site are pending from FDEP. Any further actions on the site will be based on FDEP's final determination. FDEP provided comments requiring further testing on site, however, it is allowing the County to proceed with vertical demolition activities, which are expected to commence mid-summer 2026 (barring any bidding issues or permitting delays). A presentation to the Board will be provided during its May 12, 2026 Workshop meeting to address the one remaining open topic affecting space programming: whether to provide for child care accommodations as part of the new Government Center.

8. Resiliency Plan Update (UPDATED)
In February 2025, the County completed a County-wide Risk Assessment and Resilience Plan to address current and evolving flood risk through diverse adaptation strategies. The Plan identifies the improvements required by the system of neighborhood canals (over 1,800 miles), pumps, drainage systems, and seawalls for flood protection that operate throughout our jurisdiction. Operation, maintenance and improvements to said system are a multijurisdictional endeavor (i.e., municipalities, local drainage districts, various community associations and, at the regional level, the Army Corps of Engineers). This Plan requires an estimated total investment of $28B, of which the public sector investment is an estimated $9B over a 30-year period. This is in addition to the regional canal system overseen by the Army Corps of Engineers. Towards this end, the County appropriated $5M to partner with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to fund a Section 203 Broward Basin Flood Resiliency Study focused on primary canals and is actively working to gain Congressional authorization of the study recommendations as part of the 2026 Water Resources Development Act. The Study Report was completed on April 21, 2026, and transmittal to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works scheduled to occur on April 29, 2026. Also, the County gained a $50M authorization for water infrastructure improvements under Section 219 of the Water Resources Development Act (WDRA). In FY26, the County allocated $1.5M for construction of culvert projects consistent with the County's Resilience Plan. A grant announcement led to four project awards by the Commission on March 3, 2026, with funds leveraged over 7:1. Staff is currently preparing a Resilience Plan Implementation Strategy, scheduled for transmittal to the Board in May 2026.
