Standard Response Procedures

The Broward County Mosquito Control Section provides integrated mosquito management services across all 31 municipalities within Broward County. Our team collaborates closely with state and local agencies, including the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, City/Town Manager's Offices, Public Works, and Code Enforcement, to ensure mosquito-related concerns are addressed promptly and efficiently.

During the wet summer months, mosquito activity increases significantly, raising the risk of disease transmission, including dengue, West Nile virus, and malaria. In response, our team uses an integrated mosquito management approach, guided by Chapter 388, Florida Statutes (F.S.), to reduce mosquito populations and protect public health.

Our response process includes the following steps:

1. Field Inspection and Surveillance

Following a service request, we assess the area to determine appropriate treatment. Surveillance activities may include:

  • Deploying traps to monitor mosquito populations.
  • Conducting landing rate counts to assess mosquito activity.
  • Inspecting known breeding sites to identify potential sources of infestation.
  • Inspection of property and other surrounding areas.

2. Larvicide Treatment

If mosquito breeding habitats are identified, our team either removes small breeding habitats (e.g., containers) or applies larvicide treatments to prevent mosquitoes from developing into biting adults. Treatments may include:

  • Daytime point application - using truck-mounted, ATV-mounted, or manual sprayers to target breeding habitats (e.g., in ditches, stormwater infrastructure, bromeliads, and birdbaths).
  • Nighttime areawide applications - Treatments occur between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. using truck-mounted turbine sprayers targeting disease-carrying mosquitoes. Public notice is issued each time this treatment occurs.
  • Drone applications - conducted during the daytime in selected County and local parks or natural/preserve areas.

3. Adulticide Treatment

When mosquito populations meet the required threshold established by Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) Rule 5E-13.036, adulticides may be applied through:

  • Backpack sprayers - used during the day for targeted treatment of small to medium-sized properties.
  • Truck- or ATV-mounted sprayers - used during the night to treat large areas such as neighborhoods and community parks.
  • Aerial spraying - conducted during the night when ground treatments are insufficient, typically in municipalities with large property sizes or those near the Everglades. Before this treatment is deployed, we coordinate with the appropriate municipalities and public notice is issued.

This ongoing cycle of surveillance, larviciding, and adulticiding forms the foundation of our integrated approach to mosquito control.
