For the past century, UF-IFAS Extension has put land-grant university research and education to work, preserving the balance of natural resources and quality of life for all Floridians. Extension brings the exceptional resources and knowledge of the University of Florida faculty and staff directly to you through our Extension programs. Here in Broward County, we have helped millions of people over the years apply research-based solutions to their homes, businesses, and communities.

What Is Cooperative Extension?

Cooperative Extension is a nationwide educational network that brings the research and knowledge of land-grant institutions to people in their homes, workplaces, and communities. Extension links the resources and expertise of more than 3,000 county Extension offices, 105 land-grant colleges and universities (which include historically black colleges, tribal colleges, and institutions serving the U.S. territories), and the federal government through USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (formerly CSREES).

Extension educators deliver research-based programs through workshops, home-study courses, Web-based learning tools, and other methods to give people the knowledge, skills, and motivation to improve quality of life, business opportunity, and profitability. The emphasis of Extension programs is on sustained action by learners.

The Extension Education Section was established to provide research-based information to Broward County residents and businesses for improved quality of life and business profitability. Extension Education is a partnership between Broward County Government and the University of Florida. Program areas continually evolve to dynamically meet the needs of the residents. Information and educational programming cover a wide variety of areas.

Program Areas

4-H Youth Development

4-H is for youth, ages 5 to 18, who want to meet new friends, learn great skills, and become active, informed members of their communities. 4-H is an informal, fun learning program where youth are able to maximize their talents through hands-on educational activities.

The Broward County 4-H program offers hands-on education in many different areas, including marine science, food and nutrition, photography, horticulture, small animals, horses, computers, and more! 4-H also offers leadership opportunities through participation in public speaking, environmental awareness summer camp, 4-H Congress, and Legislature Week.

Urban Horticulture

Urban horticulture programs are designed to help residents with environmental and pest control needs. Master Gardeners, Horticulture Technicians and Extension Agents are always available to assist with landscape and gardening questions. Programs, such as Florida Yards and Neighborhoods, teach residents to maintain attractive landscapes while reducing yard waste, pesticide, fertilizer, and water use. Together, we keep Broward green!

Commercial Horticulture

Nursery production, landscape installation, landscape maintenance, and arboriculture account for over $250 million in annual sales in Broward County. Hundreds of firms employ thousands of individuals helping contribute to a strong economy and beautiful environment. Workshops, seminars, and diagnostic services are provided to help these industries be environmentally friendly, successfully managed, and on the cutting edge of issues.

Family and Consumer Services

This program is fully funded by the University of Florida. The nutrition experts located at the Broward County Extension office have developed a nutrition education program for families and individuals who are on a limited budget.
