​​What is Home Rule?

Broward County was founded by an act of the State Legislature in 1915, local voters approved a Broward County Charter on November 5, 1974, which brought “home rule” to Broward County as of January 1, 1975. Home rule meant that the County no longer had to look to the State Legislature for approval of local bills effecting change in County government.

There are 20 Charter Counties in Florida, including Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Hillsborough and Orange counties.​
