This service must be free to customers.
Battery Acceptance Rules
Q: Do I have to accept batteries not purchased at my store?
A: Yes, depending on your retailer type:
- Large Volume & Repair Retailers: Must accept applicable batteries regardless of brand
- Small Volume Retailers: Must accept up to:
- 10 batteries per customer per day (baseline)
- More if tied to a same-day purchase
When Must I Accept Batteries?
Q: What are the required collection hours?
A: You must accept batteries:
- Every day you are open
- Starting within 1 hour after opening
- Ending no earlier than 1 hour before closing
In-Store Setup Requirements
Q: Where do collection containers go?
A: Place them in a:
- Conspicuous
- Clearly marked
- Easily accessible location inside your store
Handling & Disposal
Q: What do I do with collected batteries?
A: You are responsible for ensuring all collected materials are:
- Safely handled
- Properly transported
- Recycled in compliance with state and federal laws
Signage Requirements
Q: Do I need to post signs?
A: Yes. You must post signage:
- At store entrances
- Near battery sales areas
Signs must:
- Be at least 8.5" x 11"
- Include required warning language about fire risks and illegal disposal
Customer Costs
Q: Can I charge customers to drop off batteries?
A: No. Collection must be provided at no cost.
Can I Set My Own Rules?
Q: Can I limit or control how batteries are dropped off?
A: Yes—but only for:
Rules cannot conflict with ordinance requirements.
