Permits are required for any project which changes the flow of water over the surface. This is to make sure that rainwater goes to catch basins, stormwater ponds or canals, which protects natural waters and wetlands. Good design will help prevent flooding.

The type of permit and the issuing Agency depends upon the type of project, the location and the size. Larger and complicated projects are overseen by State Agencies. But Broward County has an Agreement which allows the County to issue permits for the State in many cases.

Permits for projects within the Water Management Division areas are reviewed and issued by the Environmental Permitting Division. The Surface Water Management Section should be contacted first for help to determine the permits your project may need. Use the links below to find more information.
