A water control district (WCD) is an area where the flow of water in canals and connected lakes is managed using gates or pumps. Control gates are opened to drain water when it there is a lot of rain and closed to hold water in most of the time. Pumps are turned on to bring in water during the dry season.

Broward County has over twenty water control districts! Most of the Districts are not part of the County government. Property taxes are used to fund the districts. This map shows all of the WCDs in Broward County.

Broward County government oversees four Water Control Districts. They are all in the north part of the County. The Board of Commissioners makes decisions about how the districts are managed. The Water Management Division does the work. Each District also has an Advisory Board. The Advisory Board is made up of citizens who own property in the District.
