Mandatory Airport Employee Emergency Training (AEET) Ongoing

On May 6, 2019, the National Association of Counties (NACo) announced FLL's new Airport Employee Emergency Training (AEET) Program had won a 2019 Achievement Award in the category of Personnel Management, Employment, and Training. The Broward County Aviation Department (BCAD) launched the innovative industry-leading training program in August 2018 to better prepare airport employees to respond to emergencies such as active threats, hurricanes, and aircraft incidents.

"Congratulations to everyone involved in developing this innovative program! Your hard work will yield positive results for Broward County residents," a NACo official said.

AEET Background Information

BCAD launched its innovative industry-leading Airport Employee Emergency Training (AEET) training program on August 15, 2018, to better prepare employees to respond to emergencies such as active threats, hurricanes, and aircraft incidents. More than 17,000 employees who routinely work at FLL have taken the new training program as of the end of 2018.

This first-of-its-kind training program was approved and endorsed by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners for all employees who regularly work at FLL or who have Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badges and/or Public Area Business Purpose (PABP) credentials. Airport employees and all impacted constituents are required to take AEET every two years.

Employees can access and complete this mandatory training from any device with internet access. The approximately 2.5-hour program consists of six modules covering topics such as FLL’s emergency response plans, communications during emergencies, basic first aid, customer service tips and recognizing human trafficking.

Employee Parking and Shuttle Operation -Update

Issued: June 7, 2019

FLL 2019-56

We listened and have made the changes you requested for the Employee Parking and Shuttle Operation.

Starting Saturday, June 8, 2019, the Employee Parking lot entrance gates will be manned 24/7, while the gate arm equipment is being updated.

To enter the parking lot you will need your parking card. Without your parking card, you will be denied entrance.

Starting Friday, June 14, the Terminal Employee Stops will be adjusted. The lower level stops will be located at the west end of Terminal 1 and at GTA-3.

Additional CCTV units will be added to the Employee Parking lot in various locations.

Employee shuttles will be replaced with Eldorado Axess heavy duty 40-foot shuttles. The new shuttles are expected to arrive January through March 2020. (Example attached)

In the coming weeks, Employee Parking and Shuttle Operation users will be asked to complete a survey to assist the Broward County Aviation Department in making further improvements and to ensure we offer you the highest level of guest experience possible.

Thank you for your partnership and teamwork as we always strive to improve.

Employee Lot Separation

In an effort to improve service, we are making additional changes to the employee parking lot(s) to reduce wait times and provide for better sequencing of the shuttles.
• Effective April 16, 2018, at midnight, each parking lot will be dedicated to an Employee Terminal Stop.
• Lot 1 shuttles will provide service only to Employee Terminal Stop 1, serving the Rental Car Center and Terminals 1 and 2.
• Lot 2 shuttles will only provide service to Employee Terminal Stop 2, serving Terminals 3 and 4.
• There will be no change to ADA services.
When the shuttle arrives curbside at the Terminal Employee Stop, all guests onboard the shuttle will exit allowing a larger number of guests waiting at the stop the ability to board the first shuttle that arrives.  Every shuttle picking-up at the Terminal Employee Stop will utilize its full capacity transporting more guests in queue.
Over the next few months, we will continue to explore further enhancements to improve your overall experience. We will notify you in advance of these changes.
For compliments or concerns regarding the shuttle call (888) 879-1540.

Employee Lot Station Closures

As a result of your comments, we are making changes to the employee lot shuttle service. The first of these changes will be effective Wednesday, February 21st, 2018 at midnight which involves closing four (4) employee station stops - Lot 1: D, F & K and Lot 2: Q. By closing these stops, it will decrease the commute time and the number of out of service shuttles in the lot(s). However, these stops will remain open to assist our ADA team members for pick-up/drop-off. Over the next 30 days, we will be implementing additional changes that will enhance your experience. We will notify you in advance of these changes. View employee parking lot reminders.

  • Buses run 24 hours a day seven days a week with up to a ten-minute wait.
  • The bus ride takes about 20 minutes. It could potentially take more time if there is heavy traffic.
  • The Employee Parking Lot is divided into Lots 1 and 2.
  • The buses are identified as Lot 1 or Lot 2 and will only go to one lot.
  • Park in either Lot 1 or Lot 2.
  • Board a bus from one of the 14 bus stations in the two lots.
  • There are two bus stops on the upper-level roadway. One stop is located between Terminals 1 and 2. The second stop is located between Terminals 3 and 4. The stops will be clearly identified.

  • After you park your car, call 954-359-3636 and provide the bus stop number for an ADA accessible minivan. There will also be parking personnel to assist located curbside in both the parking lot and at the terminal bus stops.
  • For safety reasons, all ADA pick-up and drop-off locations will be on the upper-level curbside, RCC Busway or the shelters in the Employee Parking lots.
  • The shuttle buses are not ADA compatible. To meet ADA requirements, there are ADA minivans available.

  • A security fence surrounds the entire Employee Parking Lot.
  • The area is well lit.
  • A dedicated security officer, a shuttle supervisor, and parking staff patrol the lot.
  • Each bus has interior and exterior cameras.
  • The lot will be under surveillance by CCTV cameras.

Real-Time Information

The free FLL App provides shuttle bus arrival times and locations of the buses. The App only tracks the new smaller white shuttle buses not the larger shuttle buses in our current fleet. Since the FLL app cannot track the larger shuttle buses, the wait times will not be totally accurate in some instances. As more shuttle bus drivers complete their training, we will use more of the new white shuttles buses and less of the larger buses so the App will be more accurate.

  • Airport employee parking was relocated from an off-site lot to the Cypress Garage as a temporary measure in 2007. This was during the peak of a national recession because it was underutilized by passengers at this time but had room for airport employees. Today, that is not the case.
  • To accommodate the increase in passengers, more airport employees are needed. There is now a shortage of parking spaces in the Cypress Garage. At peak times, from 14 – 17 hours per day, nearly 4,000 employees attempt to park in 3,143 spaces.
