Broward Next, an initiative to review the Broward County Land Use Plan to ensure it is reflective of Broward’s current and anticipated conditions and priorities, has made affordable housing one of the County Commission’s top priorities.

County Commissioners are actively involved in the Florida Legislature's Affordable Housing Workgroup, which makes public policy recommendations to expand the availability of safe and affordable workforce housing for all Floridians.

The Broward Housing Council held an Affordable Housing Workshop in August to provide recommendations for An Inclusive Housing Plan.

Urban communities like Broward are fighting homelessness with collaborative “Housing First” programs that provide a brief period of emergency sheltering followed by rapid rehousing, and ongoing supportive services such as case management to address physical and mental health issues and promote self-sufficiency.

Broward’s Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department guides the physical development of the Broward Municipal Services District (unincorporated area) by planning what can be built where and ensuring that buildings and infrastructure are developed in a safe and environmentally sound fashion.

In March, the Broward County Commission approved an investment of $8 million toward partnership with local non-profit organizations to build 40 affordable homes in Central County in the Broward Municipal Services District. This housing project will help more low and moderate-income households realize their dreams of home ownership. This project comes on the heels of $4.3 million invested by the County to build and finance 18 homes in Franklin Park Estates. An additional investment of $4.5 million was used to build 21 new affordable homes in nearby Roosevelt Gardens and Washington Park. Homes are awarded through a lottery system.

In the 2017 Florida Legislative session, Affordable Housing Programs received $250 million in total funding, an $85 million increase from the 2016 budget. Of the $250 million, $100 million was appropriated to the State Housing Initiative Program. Broward County received $2.85 million. Those funds were used for special needs housing ($577,100), home repair assistance (596,446), purchase assistance ($400,000), new construction of single family homes ($560,000), foreclosure prevention assistance (69,706), new rental construction ($350,000), water and sewer connections ($50,000) and administration and operations costs ($288,546).
