Central and West Wing Asbestos Abatement and Demolition
The Central and West wings will both be demolished to make way for the construction of a 500-car garage and an outdoor plaza. Asbestos must be removed from both buildings prior to the demolition. The asbestos abatement will be conducted in accordance with Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and will be tightly monitored and controlled to ensure safety. Two different contractors will be conducting independent air quality testing during the process and all staff located in the adjoining East Wing will be isolated from the asbestos removal.
The asbestos removal is expected to take approximately six weeks, followed by the demolition of both buildings. Completion is expected in late 2018 or early 2019.
East Wing Renovations
This project entails the complete renovation of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th floors of the East Wing of the Broward County Judicial Complex. It also includes the renovation of existing restrooms, mechanical rooms, the retrofit of building systems and the provision of new systems furniture for tenants. This portion of the project is expected to cost approximately $26 million, and is scheduled for completion in 2021.
