Social Media Campaign Offers Free Affordable Housing Information

Broward Housing Council’s website, BrowardHousingCouncil.org, and newsletters continue to develop a large following. Summer @ Broward County Libraries Division Means Free Food and Fun!

Through August 16, participating Broward County Libraries Division locations, in conjunction with Sisters for Abundant Living, are providing free lunch and afternoon snacks for children ages 18 and under. The meals are made possible by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Summer BreakSpot program, and meet the United States Department of Agriculture nutritional guidelines. A Cleaner Broward: Nearly a Ton of Litter Removed During 2013 Cleanup

As part of the Great American Cleanup 2013, volunteers removed approximately 2,000 pounds of litter from Broward County school grounds. Between March 1 and May 31, Solid Waste and Recycling Services worked with “Keep Broward Beautiful” partner cities and nearly 4,000 students to coordinate the drive. Horizon Elementary School in Sunrise picked up the greatest amount of litter, removing 240 pounds in just two hours. In Hollywood, Driftwood Middle School students removed 234 pounds of litter, with Atlantic Tech in Coconut Creek close behind with 233 pounds. The Town of Davie had the highest number of participating schools. More...

“Beat the Heat Hikes” at Broward County Natural Areas

There’s no reason to stay cooped up indoors when you can participate in “Beat the Heat Hikes” every other weekend through September at select North Broward Natural Areas. The free hourlong naturalist-led hikes take you through scrub, pine flatwood and cypress habitats as you learn about how plants and animals adapt to summer heat. Port Everglades Applauds U.S. Army Corps Feasibility Report

Broward County and Port Everglades officials welcomed the news that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE) released its draft report for deepening and widening the South Florida seaport’s navigational channels to enable safe passage of deep draft post-Panamax cargo ships. The full report, USACOE Feasibility Report with Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Port Everglades Harbor, was followed by an official 45-day comment period in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. New Price Structure for Pet Registration Tags

Broward County Animal Care and Adoption has adjusted its pet registration fees for dogs and cats. All dogs and cats that are at least 4 months old must be vaccinated against rabies and registered with the County. The dog registration tag fee is $25 for a spay/neutered (fixed) dog and $55 for not spayed/neutered (not fixed). The cat registration tag is $15 for a spayed/neutered (fixed) cat and $30 for not spayed/neutered (not fixed). While dogs and cats can continue to receive a three-year rabies vaccination, the pet registration must be renewed each year on the anniversary of the rabies vaccination. The next Rabies Clinic is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 3, at Collins Community Center, 3900 N.E. Third Ave., Oakland Park. More...

Broward artist Harumi Abe’s artwork is on display at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) through September 30. The exhibition, titled 134 Days and 21 Hours, is located at the Lee Wagener Art Gallery, Terminal 2, Departures level. 134 Days and 21 Hours embodies some of Abe’s personal journey in search of “home.” More...

Parks Division Introduces New Online Reservation System

Park patrons can now make reservations online for a variety of amenities and services accessible via broward.org/Parks and click RESERVE ONLINE. More than 110 picnic shelters and corporate pavilions throughout the County are available through the new system. Residents can purchase annual gate, skate park and seasonal aquatic passes, as well as rent Funbrellas at select parks. They can also register for specific programs and activities, and check the availability of indoor venues for meetings, weddings and other special events. More...
