April 2023 Flooding Event County Response

On April 12–13, 2023, Broward County experienced a historic 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event, resulting in catastrophic flash flooding. The City of Fort Lauderdale recorded a record-breaking 25.91 inches of rain within 24 hours, while neighboring cities including Dania Beach and Hollywood also faced extreme inundation. 

Impact and Response

  • Emergency Operations: The Broward County Emergency Operations Center activated to Level 2 to coordinate massive rescue and recovery efforts.

  • Lifesaving Rescues: Emergency crews responded to over 900 calls for assistance, including roughly 800 swift water rescues of individuals stranded in vehicles and homes.

  • Infrastructure Disruptions: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport closed for nearly 40 hours, canceling over 1,000 flights and impacting 60,000 passengers. Major roadways, schools, and Port Everglades fuel distribution were also significantly disrupted.

  • Community Support: A temporary shelter was established at Holiday Park, housing approximately 600 displaced residents. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army provided hot meals and comfort stations. 

Damage and Recovery

  • Widespread Loss: Preliminary assessments indicated damages exceeding $100 million, with over 1,000 homes sustaining major damage. Fort Lauderdale's City Hall facilities were considered a "complete loss."

  • Federal Assistance: Following the extreme impact, a Presidential Disaster Declaration was issued on April 27, 2023, making residents and business owners eligible for federal loans and assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration.
