Fall 2017

I hope that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving with family and friends. As we close out 2017, I would like to extend my best wishes for a happy holiday season and a healthy, prosperous New Year. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me to serve as your County Commissioner for Northwest Broward, and take a moment to reflect on the past year.

As your voice on the County Commission, I have tried my hardest to represent you in every aspect of County government. I have met with the major department heads of the various operating entities throughout the County to immerse myself in their mission and operating procedures. We have some exceptional leaders running large operations touching all aspects of South Florida. Broward’s Airport and Seaport are among the busiest and fastest-growing in the nation. They are both self-supporting enterprise zones which means that they service their operations without using our property tax dollars. They are helping to support our South Florida economy and together with our Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, they really showcase Broward County on a global scale.

On the economic front, Broward continues to excel in job growth. Our unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the Country. Together with our neighboring counties, we also made a push to bring Amazon’s new headquarters to South Florida. This is an exciting and great opportunity, regardless of how it plays out, and we must continue to effectively position Broward to attract new businesses and jobs to our area.

The past year brought us various incidents requiring the operation of Broward’s Emergency Operations Center, the most visible was Hurricane Irma. The Broward County Emergency Operations Center team worked tirelessly leading up to the storm to make sure Broward residents were as prepared as possible. Working with our emergency professionals, I was able to get information and communication out to my constituents and the cities in my District before, during, and after the hurricane. On the social services front, Broward continues to make investments in new programs to help some of our most vulnerable residents. While there is always more to be done, I am happy to continue to push these issues to the forefront.

I look forward to continuing to serve your needs. There are many exciting things ahead for Broward County and I will always continue to advocate for the best outcomes for our County.

I am always available to discuss any issues or concerns. I can be reached at MUdine@Broward.org or 954-357-7003. I encourage everyone to follow me on Social Media @MichaelUdine on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram or our District website www.commissionerudine.com.

Sincerely,

Veterans

Broward Veterans Coalition

As your District 3 County Commissioner, making sure I am informed and engaged on issues affecting our veterans is a priority. Spending time visiting with veterans in our community, listening to their concerns, and sharing relevant County information is important to me. I recently had the opportunity to address the Broward Veteran’s Coalition at their October meeting. While I was there, we discussed concerns regarding safety and accessibility to VA Clinics, transportation options, and FDOT allowing increased highway signage to better direct veterans to clinics. We also spoke about job opportunities for veterans in Broward County, and I was also able to provide an update on the County’s role in combating the opioid epidemic that is devastating families in our community and across the nation.

Proclamation for Senior Master Sergeant Chad Martens Day

As we just observed Veterans Day this year, I encourage all of you to take the time to thank or give back to the brave men and women in our armed forces, and remember those who have lost their lives honorably in the line of service. At the September 26th County Commission Meeting, I had the honor of recognizing a special veteran in District 3. Senior Master Sergeant Chad Martens was presented with a proclamation recognizing his time in the United States Air Force Reserves—more than 27 years. SMSgt. Martens completed four overseas deployments in Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, and Kuwait. His wife, two young sons, and parents were by his side as we presented him with a proclamation designating September 26th Senior Master Sergeant Chad Martens Day in Broward County.

Mayor’s Art Challenge

Artwork of Matthew Schneider

Congratulations to a young artist in District 3, Matthew Schneider of Coral Glades High School. Matthew was chosen as the District 3 finalist for the Mayor’s Art Challenge, where his art piece titled “Hurricane” was awarded second place at the Mayor’s Gala on October 21st. All of the art work selected from each of the 9 Commission Districts was donated to a silent auction, with the money raised directly benefiting United Way of Broward County. At the November 7th Commission Meeting, all of the finalists in the Mayor’s Art Challenge were recognized for their beautiful art work. Congratulations Matthew, and great job representing District 3!
