At the end of the Fiscal Year 2014, the state of Broward County is “strong and stable.” Prudent and well planned projects and capital spending are helping secure a path to increased economic development and prosperity.

Broward County is one of only five counties in Florida with AAA ratings from Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s Investor Service and Fitch.

County Commissioners approved a Fiscal Year 2014 budget of $4.1 billion including tax supported and non-tax supported funds, and kept all County services at their current levels.

The millage rate (tax and non-tax supported) remained mostly flat except for a slight increase of .17 mills or less than 20 cents per $1,000 of taxable value. The proposed combined millage rate for FY14 is $5.723 per thousand dollars of taxable value.

The most significant change in the budget was $22.5 million in funding for the new Regional Consolidated Communications System for E-911, intended to improve public safety while achieving long-term cost savings for taxpayers.

Agencies funded by the Broward County Commission count for less than 25 percent of a resident’s overall tax bill, which includes taxes collected by Broward County on behalf of other taxing authorities, including municipalities and the Broward School District. Nearly half of the budget managed by the County Commission is allocated to the constitutional offices, including Broward Sheriff’s Office, Property Appraiser and Supervisor of Elections.

This year, Commissioners approved an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) project, to integrate Broward County’s core business systems and processes to make government more efficient and improve access to information. The project officially launched in August 2014, and will span four years, in three rollout phases.

Broward Means Business

  • Broward County applied for and received $25 million in grants in the last fiscal year. Grants help the County leverage property tax resources to continue programs that improve the quality of life for residents and contribute to a thriving business community.
