Broward County > Government > District 1 - Martin David Kiar
Message from the Commissioner

My name is Martin David Kiar and I am the Broward County Commissioner for District 1 and Broward County’s Vice Mayor. District 1 encompasses parts of Davie, Weston, Sunrise, Plantation, Lauderhill and Tamarac.

From 2006-2012, I had the privilege of serving you in the Florida House of Representatives. It was a tremendous honor to have been able to make a positive difference in the lives of the people of our great state. Although I loved serving you in the Florida legislature, I am thrilled to have now been elected to the Broward County Commission.

As a lifetime resident of Broward County, I am committed to maintaining our unique way of life for all residents and future generations. We need to keep county property taxes low, improve our economy, ensure that we have the necessary services for our residents and continue to improve the community we all hold so dear to our hearts.

I am excited to have the opportunity to serve in a position close to home with my young and growing family and I look forward to continue working to make Broward County a great place to live, work, learn, play and retire. If I can ever be of assistance to you, then please contact me at any time.

Kindest regards,
Martin David Kiar

Broward Vice Mayor Proposes Civil Fines and not Arrest or Jail for Minor Marijuana Possession

Broward County Commissioners have agreed to consider a future ordinance that could reduce the punishment for misdemeanor marijuana possession. Under the initial proposal, law enforcement officers would have the option of issuing a misdemeanor civil citation punishable by a $100 fine or make an arrest if a person is caught with twenty grams of marijuana or less in Broward County.  More...
