HEALTHCARE & PUBLIC SAFETY

  • Broward Heart Project: Spearheaded the original $10 million program making Broward the first county in the U.S. to offer free preventive cardiac CT scans. Over 7,000 residents scanned; more than half found to have heart risks requiring medical intervention.
  • Authored the first ordinance in the United States that requires hospitals and/or diagnostic centers to inform patients receiving a cardiac scan with no contrast that a calcium score test does not show soft plaque, which is the most dangerous plaque.
  • First Responder Support: Won approval to provide 12 months of housing payments to families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
  • Elevator Safety: Passed stricter county-wide elevator safety regulations.
  • PFAS Water Testing: Won Commission approval to test Broward's drinking water for PFAS "forever chemicals."
  • Boeing 737 Max 8: Among the first elected officials in the country to call for a ban on Boeing 737 Max 8 flights at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport following two fatal crashes.

FOOD SECURITY & COMMUNITY

  • The Bread Promise: Launched a program where residents donate $5 to send a fresh loaf of bread to local homeless shelters, personally committing to 100 loaves per month.
  • Voter Accessibility: Championed pre-paid postage for absentee mail-in ballots countywide, removing a barrier to voting.
  • "Ban the Box": Co-sponsored an ordinance removing criminal history disclosure from initial Broward County job applications, giving all applicants a fairer shot.
  • Living Wage Ordinance: Passed amendments allowing covered employees who opt out of health benefits to receive a higher hourly wage.
  • Paid Parental Leave: Sponsored 4.5 weeks of paid parental leave for county employees, including foster parents and registered domestic partners.
  • CEDAW Ordinance: Co-sponsored a 2019 ordinance adopting UN women's rights principles and directing the County Auditor to collect gender equity data.

EDUCATION & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

  • "Last Dollar" Bridge Scholarship: Established Florida's first county-college scholarship partnership with Broward College, providing gap funding to help hundreds of students complete their degrees.
  • Business Education Seminars: Hosted seminars across District 2 cities teaching local business owners how to compete for a share of the $600+ million Broward County spends annually on goods and services.
  • 25% CBE Goal: Sponsored an amendment requiring 25% County Business Enterprise participation on eligible contracts, directing more county spending into the local economy.
  • BMSD Revolving Loan Fund: Supported low-interest loans for local businesses to spur growth and reduce urban blight.
  • Employer Assisted Housing: Backed programs providing down payment assistance and forgivable loans to help employees live near their workplace.
  • Pompano Beach CRA Settlement: Brokered a settlement between the county and the Pompano Beach CRA, resolving long-standing disputes and clearing the way for affordable housing and commercial development.
  • "Triple-A" Governance: Introduced an Accountability, Achievement, and Award framework with standing Commission agenda tracking, re-emphasized in his second term as a cornerstone of how he runs the county.
  • 2026 FIFA World Cup: Secured $2 million in Commission-approved sponsorship funding to attract World Cup tourism to Broward County.

ENVIRONMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Monarch Hill Landfill: Brokered an initial agreement to limit disposal operations at the Monarch Hill landfill in Coconut Creek, and voted against the subsequent proposal to expand it in February 2025.
  • TNC Regulations: Helped establish county-wide regulations to fairly govern Transportation Network Companies like Uber and Lyft.
  • Towing Regulations: Pushed for stricter enforcement of tow truck rules to protect consumers.
  • Condo Safety Transparency: Following the 2021 Surfside collapse, spearheaded a public "one-stop shop" website giving residents and homebuyers easy access to condo structural reports and building documents.
  • Fraud Protection Program: Launched a county program to protect Broward property owners from deed and title fraud.
  • Florida Turnpike Expansion: Advocated to cap the number of lanes added near residential neighborhoods in District 2, protecting quality of life along the corridor.
  • Land Use: Worked with residents to address concerns about a major mixed-use development, advocating for stronger notice requirements on re-zonings and environmental permits.​
