This is skilled and specialized work preparing files for digital and offset production using graphic arts applications, customer data files, and variable data composition software.
An employee in this class operates automated high speed production print, insertion, and bindery equipment to produce booklets, flyers, brochures, forms and modifies large format display materials. Work includes page assembly, color correction, and page composition. Work also involves the preparation of cost estimates for printing orders. Supervision is received from a technical supervisor who checks for accuracy, quality and completion of production schedules.
Determines prepress requirements by reviewing work orders, design required, content, and specifications; schedules jobs for graphics design, presses, copiers and bindery machines; ensures product meets client quality expectations.
Corrects any formatting errors on artwork provided by the client to ensure that the publication meets the customer’s requirements; provides proofreading support.
Interprets instructions and executes the programming process using variable programming software, database and graphic arts applications.
Prepares metal plates that are used by traditional four color offset printing presses; operates digital plate-making equipment and maintains digital files; operates various computer applications associated with the Central Print Shop including raster image processor (RIP), file management and process or job tracking applications.
Transfers files electronically by sending files on the network to color and monochrome printing equipment; scans jobs and saves to different file types and folders.
Operates various types of bindery equipment such as drills, folders, collators and staplers when needed.
Prepares cost estimates for print and copy orders placed by customers; discusses job specifications and estimates and evaluates alternative printing methods; obtains quotes for purchases and work orders.
Reviews completed work prior to billing to ensure job was completed according to customer specifications.
Maintains optimal machine performance by correcting simple machine problems (clearing paper jams, refilling toner, replacing machine oil, etc.) and having a working knowledge of machine codes to report, in the event of equipment failure.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge of printing plates by separating colors; operating plate-making systems.
Knowledge of electronic prepress for both offset and digital printing.
Knowledge of design concepts.
Knowledge of the operating characteristics of high-speed color and monochrome copiers.
Knowledge of the various types of bindery equipment used in digital printing.
Knowledge of basic maintenance and service procedures used in digital printing.
Knowledge of raster image processor (RIP) applications, file management applications, and process or job tracking applications.
Knowledge of stock specifications and quantity estimating.
Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to detect equipment malfunctions and to make necessary adjustments or to request repair service.
Ability to keep records of work produced.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.

Graduation from high school; three ( 3) years experience in operating high-speed color and monochrome copiers or related equipment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
