NATURE OF WORK
This is limited supervisory and skilled technical work in the configuration, installation and maintenance of new and existing telephone and radio communications systems.
Work involves acting as a lead worker and participating in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of digital key telephone and radio systems and related equipment. Work includes supervising and performing additions, moves and changes on trunked simulcast and conventional radio systems, digital key telephone systems, PBX telephone systems, voice mail systems, automated attendants, public address systems and paging systems. Incumbents may supervise subordinate technical personnel on larger, more complicated design and installation projects. Employees exercise considerable independent judgement in determining systems and job requirements regarding the various technical phases of repair, installation, modification, maintenance and troubleshooting. Instructions are received in the form of verbal communications, memorandum, work orders, or in the form of Telephone Service Requisitions. Work is performed under the general direction of a technical superior who reviews work through reports and observation of work results.
This classification is distinguished from the Communications Systems Technician I classification by the lead worker responsibilities and by the greater experience requirements.
Supervises and installs radio and telephone systems; identifies user requirements, prepares equipment and service orders, arranges for modifications to facilities, schedules work of outside vendors, programs the system, prepares documentation and tests the system.
Supervises and performs additions, moves and changes on radio communications systems, digital key telephone systems, PBX systems, voice mail, automated attendants, public address systems
and paging systems; obtains proper equipment for installation, makes cable and wire connections, instructs users in the use of new equipment features, and prepares documentation.
Performs systems administration activities on voice mail systems and radio trunking terminals which includes preparing utilization reports, changing operating parameters and optimizing the data storage capacity.
Maintains equipment and maintenance contracts; prepares specifications and procurement documents for the purchase of equipment, parts and supplies used in the installation and maintenance of communications systems.
Oversees the operation and maintenance of the Commission Meeting Room Public Address System; provides special system requirements for various meetings; ensures sound system operation and coverage.
Installs, adjusts and programs subscriber units; analyzes, repairs and reprograms failed subscriber units; performs system preventative maintenance checks and adjustments.
Monitors operation of the network through daily analysis of diagnostics, alarms and statistical reports.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of industrial electronics as applied to electronic and digital telephone and radio systems.
Considerable knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of the electronic trades and digital key telephone systems and radio communications technology.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety of the industrial electronic trades.
Knowledge of Broward County's integrated Public Safety and County operational radio communications networks.
Ability to repair, test, maintain, troubleshoot and install digital key telephone system components and radio communications equipment.
Ability to perform additions, moves and changes of digital key telephone systems.
Ability to interpret and work from technical diagrams, schematics and blueprints.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of skilled technical subordinates on assigned projects.
Ability to perform heavy manual lifting work.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Skill in the use and operation of tools and equipment used in testing of specialized instrumentation and test devices including basic computer systems and applications.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school supplemented by technical training in communications theory and practice and radio communications technology; four (4) years experience in the installation of low level electrical systems, including two (2) years experience in the installation and maintenance of digital telephone and radio systems; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a First Class Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Radiotelephone Operator's license as required by assignment.
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment.
