ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS

NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible administrative and technical work assisting in planning, organizing and directing the activities of the Cultural Division.

Work involves assisting the Division Director in the administration and implementation of directives and programs related to divisional activities. Position incumbent assists in the development of policies and procedures, supervision of personnel, planning and organizing services to the public. Assignments are received from the Division Director in the form of broad policy statements. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment within established guidelines. Performance is reviewed periodically through conferences and written reports.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Assists the Division Director in developing and implementing divisional policies, procedures and programs; makes policy recommendations; develops program goals and objectives.

Plans, directs and supervises the activities of professional and administrative staff; coordinates divisional budgets, purchasing, personnel, grants and record keeping activities.

Makes budgetary recommendations and assists in the preparation of the division budget.

Serves as division liaison to municipal governments, advisory boards, school officials and the general public with regard to cultural programs upon request.

Confers with county officials, vendors, civic leaders and the general public regarding divisional operations; addresses public groups, attends professional meetings.

Serves as acting director in absence of the director.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of arts management.

Considerable knowledge of all federal, state and local regulatory requirements applicable to arts management.

Considerable knowledge of the funding process in a municipal environment as related to budgeting, cost accounting, financial planning and management.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of supervision, organization and administration.

Ability to plan, implement, and coordinate technical and administrative programs.

Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in decision making.

Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in arts administration or related field; six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in arts management, including four (4) years high level supervisory and administrative experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
