INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced technical field work in the Occupational Safety and Health section of the Risk Management Division. Work involves ensuring industrial hygiene standards are met in all County Departments, Offices and Divisions. This is accomplished by determining and correcting micro-biological contamination, performing environmental air monitoring, developing an industrial hygiene safety program, investigating indoor air quality, and developing, implementing and enforcing recommendations for the elimination and/or mitigation of environmental hazards. Duties may also include performing a variety of inspections and evaluations of County-wide industrial safety programs. Overall performance is reviewed by a supervisor through reports and observation for adherence to established policies and practices.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Designs and implements comprehensive industrial hygiene programs to comply with Federal and State requirements.

Conducts studies to determine the presence of environmental related diseases and hazards and recommends remedial action.

Coordinates and delivers general and subject-specific training programs to address complex safety and health issues as necessary to satisfy compliance directives.

Utilizes industrial hygiene standards and practices to determine qualitatively and quantitatively, the amount and nature of chemical and environmental hazards in employee work environments.

Conducts work place environmental testing for contaminants utilizing accepted industrial hygiene practices and testing equipment such as: sound pressure level testing; respiratory protection hazard analysis and selection.

Directs the County-wide industrial hygiene program.

Conducts work studies of operations and processes, makes appropriate measurements to determine exposure or nuisance to workers and the public, devises methods, selects instruments, conduct measurements, and interprets results.

Calibrates and maintains all Industrial Hygiene testing equipment.

Selects appropriate testing media and works with certified laboratories to process test samples.

Makes decisions as to the effectiveness and/or need of control measures.

Develops rules, regulations, standards and procedures for the healthful conduct of work.

Prepares written reports and technical documents of field investigations/inspections and discusses findings and recommendations with County officials.

Develops and revises health and safety policies and procedures.

Develops specifications and makes recommendations for the purchase of Industrial Hygiene test equipment.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of industrial hygiene procedures and techniques used in varied employment situations and equipment operations.

Knowledge of OSHA, ACGIH, AIHA, EPA, ASHRAE, and federal, state and local regulations, standards and procedures pertaining to the occupational safety and health of employees in County operations.

Ability to use industrial hygiene and environmental testing equipment.

Ability to detect hazardous working conditions in varied work environments and recommend sound solutions to varied and complex conditions.

Ability to compile data and prepare comprehensive reports, both technical and non-technical.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to deliver training programs.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in industrial hygiene, or related field; four (4) years of experience in industrial hygiene or related fields; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. Certification or licensure (e.g. CSP, CIH) a plus.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.
