NATURE OF WORK
This is semi-skilled work performing manual work for ships calling at Port Everglades. Work involves performing manual tasks which require skill in equipment operation for cleaning and refuse disposal. Employee operates forklifts, boom trucks, and cranes in the placement of straight brows, platform brows, and gangways aboard vessels in a safe and effective manner. Work involves fresh water service to vessels and requires laying out water hoses, flushing, hookups, recovery of equipment, and preparing forms for vessel servicing.
The employee empties waste barrels throughout the port and cruise terminals, and hauls trash to disposal site. Work is performed under general supervision. Assignments are given in oral and written form. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by a superior for conformance with instructions and procedures.
Sets up various types of brows, temporary security fences, and gangways prior to the arrival of vessels in the Port; monitors brows, fences, and gangways during use to ensure safe operation of the equipment.
Operates forklifts, truck cranes, and other mechanical equipment necessary to place brows and gangways on the vessels.
Assists with the maintenance of all brows and gangways.
Maintains an ample supply of clean water hoses, fittings, meters, valves, couplings and maintains equipment in clean and proper working condition; ensures cleanliness of water boxes and equipment for periodic inspections.
Lays out lengths of water hose, flushes lines and hoses, makes proper dockside hose hookups, recovers all equipment at the completion of the operation, and completes billing forms.
Reads port tenant water meters monthly.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of manual maintenance work procedures and tasks.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of Port terminal operations.
Ability to operate standard equipment and tools used in the area of assignment including truck mounted crane, fork lift, and dump truck; ability to detect malfunctions while operating heavy equipment.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work flexible schedule being available to cover assignments when needed.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; one (1) year experience operating a forklift, truck, boom truck, and/or crane; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of appointment.
