This is specialized professional work involved in providing diversified recreational programs in the County parks system and in determining county-wide recreational needs.

Work involves assisting in planning, promoting, implementing and evaluating recreational programs. An employee in this class coordinates with recreation staff and represents the division on civic and community group recreation program needs. Work is performed with latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgment within established policies and procedures. Work is reviewed by a superior through conferences, reports, and evaluation of results obtained.


Assists site managers in scheduling, coordinating, and standardizing county-wide recreational programs.

Represents the division and coordinates on a county-wide basis with civic, fraternal, other organizations, and athletic leagues to ensure the division meets program obligations and cooperates with a variety of special groups such as the mentally and physically handicapped, and various age groups,

Coordinates programs with community schools and other public and private agencies.

Assists in developing goals and objectives and participates in planned recreation program goals and objectives.

Reviews and approves contractual agreements for recreation instructors; evaluates quality of programs and user satisfaction.

Initiates a program of public awareness of activities offered; seeks civic and community volunteers to assist with program delivery.

Assists in the development of in-service training programs for recreation personnel.

Supervises and assists in developing programs in arts and crafts, dance, music, drama, sports, and related recreational activities.

Identifies county-wide demographic trends which may indicate a need for adjusting program emphasis.

Performs related work as required.


Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational programming and administration.

Considerable knowledge of community centers, athletic scheduling, playground programs, arts and crafts, dance, music, and cultural programs.

Knowledge of county-wide recreation programs offered within other local municipalities and nonprofit agencies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, other employees and recreation program users.

Ability to prepare and maintain reports, conduct research and special studies.

Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of subordinates, including in-service training programs.

Ability to develop community participation and interest in activities through an active public relations program.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.


Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in recreation, parks management, physical education, or related field; considerable experience in planning, coordinating, and supervising recreation programs; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
