NATURE OF WORK
This is journalistic and public relations work researching, preparing and writing an extensive program of public information, publicity and news writing.
Work involves planning, coordinating as well as assisting in implementing public information activities. Work includes researching, writing, photographing, and editing material for county publications such as newsletters, pamphlets, special events and reports. Work also includes participating in the dissemination of information to newspapers, broadcasting media, periodicals and the general public. Work is conducted on an assignment basis and reviewed through conferences and evaluation of results.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Writes and edits accurate, meaningful, and readable copy for newsletters, pamphlets and special reports.
Advises and assists in developing operational guidelines for publication formats.
Obtains news material through research, interviews, and correspondence.
Assists in the preparations for conventions, publicity and special events.
Photographs and records special events and participants.
Writes news releases for news media and responses to public inquiries.
Assists in creating layouts for special publications.
Coordinates a system of reporting news items from correspondents within county divisions.
Prepares cost estimates of publications.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of research techniques, sources, and availability of information.
Some knowledge of journalistic principles and practices, and the techniques of composing and editing publicity material.
Some knowledge of English usage and the requirements of press and media broadcasts.
Ability to assemble and write interesting and informative articles, news releases, pamphlets, reports, brochures, and related publicity materials.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.
Skill in the use of photographic and video equipment.
Skill in the use of personal computers and the typewriter.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in journalism, marketing or related field; six (6) months experience in news writing, public relations or special event planning; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
