PORT EVERGLADES SURVEYOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled surveying work performed for the Port Everglades Construction Management and Planning Division.

Work involves responsibility for assisting with all necessary field survey assignments including construction layout, cross sectioning, soundings, horizontal and vertical controls, and subsurface survey. Position incumbent assists in preparing and maintaining accurate and complete field books and field notes of all survey work; calculating volumes, areas, and other calculations associated with survey work; and preparing legal descriptions of out leased land and easements. Incumbent also operates and maintains all Port owned equipment utilized in surveys and soundings. Work requires the application of knowledge of a limited technical area of engineering, planning, construction management or a related field. Work involves the use of computer aided drafting software, office machines and legal descriptions necessary for the completion of surveys. Work is assigned by a technical/ professional supervisor and may consist of oral or written instruction. Assignments are reviewed for technical accuracy while in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Assists with all necessary field survey work for the Construction Management and Planning Division including construction layout, cross sectioning, soundings, horizontal and vertical controls, and subsurface survey.

Assists in the preparation and maintenance of accurate and complete field books and field notes of all survey work.

Assists in calculations of volumes, areas, and other calculations associated with survey work.

Assists in the preparation of legal descriptions of out leased land and easements.

Operates and maintains all Port owned equipment for the preparation of survey and soundings.

Performs incidental assignments of construction inspection when required.

Performs drafting assignments manually and with the aid of computerized drafting equipment when required.

Performs other duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the standard terminology, techniques and practices of surveying.

Knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of public planning, engineering or construction management.

Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, trigonometry and plane geometry.

Some knowledge of drafting, design, and computer assisted drafting and design.

Ability to perform field survey and office work associated with preparing calculations and operating survey equipment.

Ability to comprehend and prepare simple layouts in the field.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and sketches.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

Skill in the use and care of surveying instruments, computers and related equipment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification supplemented by course work in surveying and field survey methods; three (3) years experience as a survey team member; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

Applicants with PADI certification in SCUBA are preferred.
