NATURE OF WORK
This is specialized clerical and technical work assisting in compliance with Florida's elevator regulations.
Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of functions related to the enforcement of elevator laws, codes and standards to comply with Florida Statutes, Chapter 399.
Work includes drafting and analyzing reports, organizing staff to perform inspection and plan review of elevators, developing presentations for industry and Division meetings, assembling case files for code enforcement hearings, reviewing and recommending revisions to elevator laws and regulations, establishing office procedures for handling plan review and permitting, and typing reports and documents as required by the Elevator inspector lead-worker or Director of the Division.
Work is performed independently within established policies and procedures.
Guidance and direction are often provided to clerical staff by the Elevator Records Technician. Work is subject to review upon the request of the Elevator inspector lead-worker or Director of the Division.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Provides technical information to the general public regarding elevator regulations, hearings, renewals and other related information.
Answers telephone inquiries, composes correspondence in response to requests for elevator code compliance information.
Keeps elevator installation and qualifying agent information current for records and files.
Prepares code enforcement case files, drafts and types documents as required; prepares reports and summaries as required.
Publishes notices of meetings and conferences; schedules meetings and conferences.
Processes applications and requests for permitting and inspection of elevators.
Reviews and makes recommendations for revisions to elevator laws, codes and other regulations.
Keeps current alphabetical and numerical file on all of Broward County's elevators.
Keeps current cross-reference file of all elevators histories and code enforcement proceedings.
May provide guidance and direction to clerical staff.
Initiates forms for office use.
Assists in issuance of Certificate of Operation renewals.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of business English and spelling.
Considerable knowledge of the laws, codes and regulations pertaining to elevators.
Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures.
Some knowledge of elevator contracting terminology and practices.
Ability to compose correspondence, reports and other related documents.
Ability to type at least forty words per minute.
Ability to understand governmental procedures.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation, or sexual orientation.
Skill in the operation of a typewriter, and/or personal computer.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by course work in typing or computer skills; four (4) years experience in responsible secretarial and clerical work, including six (6) months experience in compliance with elevator regulations, elevator contracting or related work environment.
