NATURE OF WORK
This is communications work in receiving and dispatching messages for routine and emergency maintenance work crews.
Work involves operating the radio dispatching system, answering telephone calls and related clerical work. Work also includes communication with other agencies regarding utility line locations. Work is performed within established operating policies and procedures, and is reviewed by observation, monitoring of calls and review of reports.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Operates the complete radio dispatching system and coordinates the dispatching of personnel and equipment by the use of radio and/or telephone equipment and in accordance with standardized procedures.
Keeps radio log records of individual dispatch duties occurring on an assigned shift.
Generates work orders related to calls, and obtains emergency underground utility wire locations when needed.
Answers telephone calls and requests for information.
Monitors locations of work crews in the field while on-call and during regular shifts.
Provides routine information and routes inquiries to the appropriate personnel.
Operates a telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD).
Utilizes and operates database systems containing information related to the dispatching of maintenance calls.
Monitors and responds to Supervisory Control and Data Requisition (SCADA) equipment.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of radio dispatching and operating procedures.
Some knowledge of standard clerical procedures and practices.
Ability to learn the general service areas of the cities and unincorporated areas within Broward County related to area of assignment.
Ability to understand oral and written instructions and to speak clearly with good diction.
Ability to communicate calmly and effectively with the general public.
Ability to operate a computer and related computer software programs.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; some experience in radio dispatching work, including some experience in the operation of computer equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
