DISPATCHER II

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced and supervisory communications work in receiving and dispatching messages for routine and emergency maintenance work crews.

Work involves performing radio dispatching functions and related clerical work. Work also includes the training of new dispatchers, preparing work schedules, and supervising subordinate dispatchers. Work is reviewed through the adequacy of communications service and through the monitoring of records.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from the position of Dispatcher I by the supervisory responsibilities and by the additional experience required.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises and participates in the dispatching of radio communications.

Receives and screens telephone calls and requests for radio information; routes inquiries to the proper recipient.

Operates the tape and reproducer machine; replaces tapes when necessary.

Prepares and maintains required records, radio logs, information logs and databases.

Assists and relieves other dispatchers.

Operates a telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD).

Utilizes and operates database systems containing information related to the dispatching of maintenance calls.

Monitors and responds to Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Geographical knowledge of Broward County, its streets, highways, and municipalities.

Knowledge of radio dispatching and operating procedures. Knowledge of radio signals and their application.

Skill in the efficient and effective utilization of communications equipment.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to communicate calmly and effectively with the general public.

Ability to operate a computer and related computer software programs.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; experience in radio dispatching work, including experience in the operation of computer equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
