SURVEY SUPERVISOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced sub-professional engineering work directing the work of an engineering survey crew.

Work involves responsibility for planning, scheduling, and assigning the work of an engineering survey crew. Work includes providing technical assistance and guidance on non-routine assignments. Considerable independence and judgment is exercised in planning and carrying out assignments. Performance is evaluated through occasional inspections and observations to determine adherence to stated objectives and conformity with accepted engineering principles.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Plans, schedules and assigns the work of an engineering survey crew; provides technical assistance and advice on non-routine assignments.

Interprets and reviews engineering plans and drawings; makes mathematical calculations; assists in the review of engineering plans with professional superiors.

Checks contract drawings; computes quantity of waste, fill, construction material, and other items.

Makes a variety of preliminary estimates for engineering projects; reviews records, charts, and statistical information of a technical engineering nature; analyzes data as it comes from the field; prepares detailed and specific recommendations for professional engineering superiors.

Consults with and supplies survey information to various city, county and private utilities and construction organizations.

Checks the work of subordinate field survey personnel.

Prepares oral and written reports as necessary.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of terminology, techniques, and practices of engineering surveying.

Considerable knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry and its application to field surveying and engineering computation.

Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices.

Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and blueprints.

Ability to make moderately complex mathematical computations accurately.

Ability to prepare maps, drawings, and charts from field notes.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and sketches.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by course work in engineering field surveying and mathematics; thorough experience in field survey work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
