NATURE OF WORK
This is technical work conducting autopsies and forensic procedures in a morgue in the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Work involves assisting medical examiners in autopsies and related duties to determine legally and medically the cause of death. Work is performed under general supervision of medical and technical superiors. Work is reviewed to evaluate the quality of results.
Receives corpses and assists pathologists in completion of autopsies.
Preserves specimens for legal or training demonstration purposes.
Completes animal autopsies, assists medical examiners in the collection of cultures and preparation of specimens for diagnostic tests.
Prepares reports and maintains records using a personal computer with basic office software and Division specific applications.
Participates in research projects as directed.
Performs other related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of gross autopsy procedures used in pathological examinations.
Some knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomical pathology, forensic fingerprinting, palm printing, and x-ray procedures.
Some knowledge of aseptic and decontamination procedures for the morgue area.
Some knowledge of morgue instruments and equipment.
Skill in the use of a variety of surgical instruments.
Ability to demonstrate a mature and respectful approach to disagreeable phases of the medical examiner's work.
Ability to lift, move, and work with cadavers in a decomposed, burned or mutilated states.
Ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive case histories.
Ability to use a personal computer and associated office software and Division specific applications.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, or political affiliation.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or equivalent; six (6) months of experience in forensic autopsy work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
