EQUIPMENT OPERATOR IV

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work in the operation of very heavy and complicated earth moving equipment.

Work involves the operation of large, complicated heavy duty equipment used in public works maintenance and construction work. Work requires a high degree of manipulative skill and adherence to close engineering standards. Duties include the operation of a heavy duty bulldozer, paving mixer, road grader, and a power crane rigged for shoveling or dragline operations, backhoe, front loader, boom truck, forklift, dump truck, and tractor-trailer. Supervision is received from a superior who inspects work in progress and checks for efficient operation and compliance with engineering standards.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This class is distinguished from Equipment Operator III by the types of equipment utilized, the leadworker responsibilities, and the greater experience requirements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Operates motor grader involved in roadway construction and maintenance; builds road crown, slopes shoulders, spreads materials, and blades drainage ditch.

Rigs and operates crane, dragline, dredge, pile driver, and similar power shovel equipment; drags, hoists, swings, and dumps materials using clamshell and bucket attachments for digging, widening, and cleaning waterways and drainage ditches.

Performs operator prechecks on equipment; checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.

Makes necessary minor adjustments and reports malfunctions to supervisor.

May act as lead person; assists supervisor in coordinating vehicle and heavy equipment preventative maintenance schedules with maintenance service personnel.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics of heavy duty earth moving equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the safety requirements applicable to large motorized construction equipment.

Ability to detect malfunctions in heavy construction equipment.

Ability to make adjustments and to perform minor maintenance to heavy equipment.

Ability to perform earth work according to engineering specifications.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in the operation of large earth moving equipment.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; thorough experience in operating heavy duty earth moving equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Florida Class A or B Commercial Driver's License depending on area of assignment.
