This is administrative work in directing the vehicle maintenance activities and fleet workplace safety of the County's Traffic Engineering Division.

Work involves participating in the activities of conducting safety inspections and investigations, evaluating conditions, developing safety training programs and recommending and enforcing solutions for employee safety. Employees are responsible for directing programs within the operations of a County fleet including, program planning and maintenance activities. Work involves serving as a liaison with other county, state, federal and community agencies. Work requires familiarity with subject matter of the project but full technical knowledge is not essential as specialists in the various aspects of the operation are utilized for technical assistance. Employees in this class are expected to coordinate and manage operations with considerable independence, although all major decisions are referred to an administrative superior for advice and direction. Supervision may be exercised over clerical staff and specially assigned technical subordinates. Work is reviewed through conferences with an administrative superior and by adherence to established policies and procedures.


Work involves the coordinating and planning of all activities of a program or project within the operation of the County's Traffic Engineering Division which has an operational responsibility of a limited scope, a small budget, and provides a supplementary county service; assists and advises on matters pertaining to programs or projects assigned.

Prepares written reports of field investigations/inspections and discusses findings and recommendations with an administrative superior and County officials to assure correction of unsafe conditions and minimization of losses.

May supervise and review the work of assigned technical and clerical staff as required by work assignments.

Reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations concerning the purchase of new or improved safety equipment, methods, practices and agency fleet.

Assists in the preparation of the fleet maintenance budget and prepares special reports as required.

Work includes the development and presenting of safety programs.

Conducts special studies in conjunction with a project; analyzes data and makes recommendations based on studies.

Provides administrative liaison among various county operational and administrative functions related to an assigned program or project; interprets and explains policy regulations and operating procedures.

Facilitates the accomplishment of work through providing, obtaining and coordinating a variety of services.

Keeps informed on the latest information, equipment and standards relating to safety and health hazards.

Performs related work as required.


Considerable knowledge of industrial hygiene, accident prevention and loss control practices, procedures and techniques used in varied employment situations and equipment operations.

Considerable knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, ANSI and federal, state and local regulations, standards and procedures pertaining to the occupational safety and health of employees in County operations.

Considerable knowledge of automotive and equipment maintenance.

Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures and techniques.

Knowledge of the tools, machinery and equipment of the automotive trades.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety rules and regulations applicable to automotive maintenance work.

Ability to prepare and present safety training programs.

Ability to detect hazardous working conditions in varied work environments and recommend sound solutions to varied and complex conditions.

Ability to compile data and prepare comprehensive reports, both technical and non-technical.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.


Completion of two years of college level course work in automotive or mechanical engineering or related field; four (4) years experience in fleet and workplace safety inspections and accident evaluation or related field; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.


Possession of a valid Florida Drivers License, Class A or B.
